Watch out for Home Repair Fraud

5/9/2012 10:35:00 AM
It could be really easy and convenient to accept an offer of home repair after a disaster when you have a contractor knocking at your front door. When you get an offer of home repairs that you have not initiated yourself and which seems too good to be true - beware. Most reputable contractors do not have time to go knocking on doors looking for repair jobs. Check with your Florida insurance agency team if you suspect a fraud and certainly before getting any repair work done – especially after a disaster.

Some con artists have perfected their schemes down to include the smallest details. They may even say that your insurance company sent them to look at your home. Many people might believe clever lines like this. These con artists might keep talking about how they can fix the damage while hinting that your homeowners' policy will cover the work.

Scammers offering their contractor services are usually looking for specific targets. They tend to show up just after a devastating storm or other disaster when people are at their most vulnerable and need help. First-time homeowners, senior citizens and people lacking home repair knowledge may all become victims of home repair fraud.

Avoid becoming a repair fraud statistic! It’s very important to check out the credentials of any contractor you engage. Contact your Florida insurance agency when your home needs repairs and ask them for their recommendations for contractors in the area.
